The city of lemon grove in San Diego County is known for it’s giant lemon monument located on Broadway at the Lemon Grove Trolley stop. It’s also known for being 3.9 square miles, all of which is land. With no natural rivers or lakes you would think bees would be scarce.
The truth is that bees still abound in the city of lemon grove. One common call we get from Lemon grove residents is that there are bees gathered by their pool or fountains. Bees will forage for water wherever they can get it…including ponds, pools, and fountains. They are seem to be particularly attracted to bubbling, running water. So what can you do when bees decide to use your pool as a water source?
Here are some tips:
1. If there is a swarm or hive, have the bees professionally removed and relocated.
2. If there are only a few dozen bees foraging for water, turn off the fountain or reduce the bubbling if possible.
3. If the above doesn’t work, try emptying the fountain for a week or two. In situations with pools, a pool cover can sometimes be helpful.
