It’s been a while since I last posted a video that featured a local beekeeper who has received one of our bee swarm rescues. The video below was taken earlier this year. It features Beekeeping Society member John, who owns a small farm out in Jamul. He manages bee hives primarily to pollinate the avocado trees on his lot. Being a responsible beekeeper, John orders his certified Italian Queen bees from the Hive Savers Network and re queens the colonies so that the bees are easier to manage. The video clip below shows Jeff “The Bee Whisperer” Lutz picking up two swarms and dropping them off to John. Also included is a short interview of John and Jeff discussing the art of beekeeping.
John was a great candidate to take care of these rescued bees. He is knowledgeable and always ensures safe beekeeping practices. He gave the bees a new home on his small farm and has been tending to them during a tough drought year. Drought years require extra care on the part of the beekeeper. Due to the lack of rain there is less availability of plants and flowers to pollinate, and also less water for them to drink. For more information on beekeeping check out our beekeeping tips.
