What do you do when you notice bees flying inside your home? It happens all the time, especially when bees decide to invade a chimney. Whenever a customer calls me and reports that there are bees inside their home, the first thing I ask is “Is there a fireplace in or near the room where you see the bees?”. The answer is often “Yes”.
Although there are many other ways bees can get into your home, through the chimney is one of the most common scenarios. Usually the first thing you will notice is bees flying in the windows or up near the skylights.
You see, when a swarm first invades a home, some of the members of the colony may become disoriented and separated from the rest of the colony. Instead of staying in the swarm cluster, these bees end up lost inside your home. The reason they usually end up near the window is that bees are drawn to the natural light. They head straight for the window in an attempt to get back outside.
So what should you do when bees invade your chimney and are getting inside your home through the fireplace? The first thing you should do is call a bee removal company to remove the swarm or hive. The sooner you call, the more likely that the bee removal professional will be able to remove the bees humanely. The longer you wait, the more likely the bees will build a hive and become more defensive. Defensive hives are much riskier to remove live.
“But wait” you may say “I’ve still got bees getting inside my home! What can I do until the technician gets to my house?”
So glad you asked! Take a look at the video below. It’s a step by step do-it-yourself instructional guide that will help keep the bees out while you wait for a bee professional to get to your home.
The video above shows how to temporarily close off a brick chimney. People with drywall Chimneys should use Painters Tape (instead of duct tape) so that the paint is not damaged when it is removed. It’s also important to use a thick (lawn type) plastic bag and not the thin white/clear kitchen trash bags.

Very useful information on when bees enter in home through your fireplace. It is a fact that bees are beneficial for the environment, but they can be harmful to humans. So when they enter into our home, removing them is important for us.
We haven’t had bees coming through our fireplace, but somehow they are getting into our attic. I’m going to try some of these tips out though. We won’t need to seal off any brick, but we’ll have to seal off the wood up there…
What to do??? When bee comes to our house
If it’s just one bee…and you are not allergic…try opening the window. They will usually fly out to get back to their queen.
Should we turn the fireplace on with some wood and fire will that eliminate the bee
You will not be successful in killing bees that way. It usually turns into bigger problems. Please call a bee specialist in your area for options that are available to you. Everyone has a different situation. Thanks
Hi Zoila. We never recommend lighting a fire. There is a chance that if you light the fire, (and there is already a hive inside), that the honey and wax could melt down the interior wall of the fireplace. That will only make the situation harder to resolve. Best to call a licensed pest control or bee removal technician in your area.
Can someone help me please? I went to work at 7an this morning when I came home at 3:15 there was bees in my kitchen and sitting room couldn’t figure out where they came from until I went outside and seen them on my chimney my neighbour tied me lite my fire so I did haven’t seen any since hiw will I no if theres a nest there and will they return ?
Hi Shannon,
The best thing to do is to monitor your chimney several times a day for the next few weeks.
Keep an eye out for any bee activity, particularly during the hottest parts of the day. Bees tend to be less active when it’s colder. If you notice dozens of bees at the top of your chimney, (or anywhere else), be sure to call a bee removal or pest control company quickly. The faster you hire someone to fix the problem, the less expensive it will be to resolve it. The longer you wait, the bigger the hive will become, and the more difficult and expensive it will be to resolve the problem.
Thank you do you think If there was a nest in my chimney they would be coming down my fireplace before yesterday? Would I have noticed it before hand ?
Hi Shannon. It’s hard to say. Sometimes bees get inside only when they first invade a chimney. Sometimes they continually get inside, even after the initial infestation. There are also times where bees never get into the living space. Every case is unique.
Where is this company located? I am searching for a friend who lives in Calimesa California!
Hi Sara. We are located in La Mesa California, which is located in the County of San Diego. We are licensed and provide service to most of San Diego County.
Not sure if these comments work anymore..I have a large bee issue and finding it almost impossible to get bee people to help me. I do have a real great live bee keeper coming today but it took several calls only to be referred to pest control who also deffered me to bee people. I was left with my problem
Hi Sydney. What you are experiencing seems to be a common problem this year. Here in San Diego County, the wild bee population is thriving, in large part to the fact that they are mostly Hybrid-Africanized bees. Swarm season this year had lots of bee companies super busy with the abundance of bees.
